Updates

I'm sorry to report that there still is no word on Nicholas Francisco. I continue to hope for a good outcome for his wife and children. If anyone is in the Seattle area, please continue to keep your eyes open. The reward for information leading to Nicholas is now $15,000.

As for August Lately, I've been working on orders and sneaking a few new designs in between.

Meet the roomy shoulder bag:

This particular bag is made from the Amy Butler Belle collection and is a bit livelier than I intended.

The same design looks incredibly different when made with dark brown ultrasuede and a classic floral print:

The ultrasuede is gorgeous in person but what a challenge it is to photograph!

In other August Lately News- The Belle bag is now also available as a design-your-own bag at August Lately:

We're battening down the hatches for yet another snow storm here in Vermont. What a winter! Hopefully I'll get some extra sewing time in.

Nicholas Francisco Update

Nicholas has now been missing for over a week with no leads whatsoever. The good news is that Christine has now been able to get national exposure for Nicholas on Fox News and will be on CNN tonight. Every person who sees the story is another who may potentially help to bring him home.

If you are so inclined, please read the article or watch the interview on FoxNews.com. The more clicks it gets, the more promotion it will get on their site, the more eyes will see it.

A Member of the Crafting Community Needs Our Help

Nicholasfrancisco

Nicholas' wife, Christine, has a shop on etsy.com. Nicholas has been missing since last Wednesday, with no sign of what happened to him, no cell phone, email or bank account use.

If you are in the Seattle area, or know anyone there, please pass on the word and help bring Nicholas home to Christine and their two (soon to be three) children.

I'm a Knockout!

Nah, not really, but I did get a little happy surprise this morning- I noticed that my little front-pocket clutch is featured in the rotating "knockout" images on the front page of etsy.com:

A sign that the rest of the day will go well? Let's hope so!

It's a Blog Happy Day!

I'm a crafting hero. Well, I'm not so sure about that, but Lisa over at Craft Boom called me one! She was very kind in asking me to do an interview, and it was posted today! I must say that I feel a bit out of place among such incredibly inspiring women as Amy Karol and Amanda Blake Soule, but am very, very honored. Thanks Lisa!

And, when I came here to log in, I noticed that Rare Bird Finds, one of my absolute favorite blogs (run by some of my very favorite indie ladies) is the Typepad Featured Blog. Congratulations Sharla and Mei-Lynn!

Wow, that was a lot of exclamation marks. No more coffee for me.

Handmade for the Holidays

Thanksgiving is this Thursday, and you know what that means! Holiday season will soon be in high gear.

This year, my husband and I are putting in a real effort to make and buy as many handmade gifts as possible. Judging from all of the handmade holiday action on the web, it seems that we’re not alone.

sew mama sew
The ladies at Sew Mama Sew are running a fantastic series on their blog- Handmade Holidays, 30 days of gifts to sew.

Each day features links to projects (all available for free at various blogs and craft sites) with a different theme. I haven’t started actually *making* anything yet, but I have found the perfect gift for almost everyone on my list through this series. Thanks gals!

buy handmade

Buy Handmade: Take the handmade pledge!

From their website: “The ascendancy of chain store culture and global manufacturing has left people all dressing, furnishing, and decorating alike. The connection between producer and consumer has been lost. Buying handmade helps them reconnect. We created the pledge as a call to action for consumers to be conscious of how they spend their money this holiday season. We want people, whenever possible, to support independent creators and shop outside the big boxes.”

At first, I thought that it would be difficult to go all handmade with two little boys in the house who have visions of toy trains and yu-gi-oh cards dancing in their heads. But as we’ve gone over their lists, we’ve found that nearly everything (with the exception of the aforementioned yu-gi-oh cards) can be handmade with a little creativity and effort!

So, I think, since I didn’t see any Chris Cringle on the pledge list, we’ll ask him to bring the yu-gi-oh cards, and the rest will be handmade from mom and dad. Our boys may not appreciate it much now, but I think they will some day.

Stretch Your Business Dollars!

I posted this in the Craft Revolution Blog, but I thought that my visitors here might like to read it as well:

Any small business owner knows that keeping the cash flow healthy in a budding business is a challenge. This problem is multiplied for crafty business owners since the supplies we purchase are often based on a want- rather than a need- basis. I have an especially hard time resisting new designer cotton fabrics when they come out. With average prices between eight and twelve dollars a yard, this can quickly add up to a very full studio and not-so-full business checking account. Luckily for me, I have recently found several fabric co-ops that have allowed me to buy the fabrics I love at much more reasonable prices.

Buy the Bolt is a new group that allows those of us with major fabric needs to purchase fabrics, well, by the bolt! Instead of each designer meeting a large bolt minimum (sometimes up to eight bolts per order), this group allows individuals to place single bolt orders at wholesale prices. The first order is for Michael Miller's new line, and I have a feeling it's going to be a big one!

Fabrics and Notions is a very active, very large group that purchases a wide array of fabrics, notions and sewing aids at wholesale for the group. If you join this group, be warned, there is a very large volume of messages each day- I get the daily digest and skim the topics each day to be sure I haven't missed a buy that I'd like to participate in.

Some tips for participating in fabric co-op groups:

Read the Files

When you get approved for a group, a number of files will automatically be emailed to you from yahoo. They will usually arrive as a word document attached to the email. READ THEM! These files will explain the basics of how to order, pay, and who to ask if you have questions. You will save yourself and the group leader a lot of time and frustration by following this step.

Don't pay early, and don't pay late
Some groups will ask for payment when ordering, others will want to wait until the fabric comes in to make sure that everything is accounted for and to avoid refunds for missing fabric. Again, it is very important to read the files and understand the group's payment policies. Paying early causes headaches for the group administrator and paying late can hold up the order for everyone.

Show Your Appreciation!

This is a big one. Running a fabric co-op is a lot of work and most take very little for their time and energy. Make sure you let them know that you appreciate the opportunity they are providing and perhaps offer to help if you can.

Supply co-ops are another great way that the professional crafting community comes together to support all of its members in making their ventures successful. If you're not sure that you'd like to participate yet, don't let that stop you from joining a group that looks interesting. Read the messages and get a feel for the group. Then, if you're comfortable, try placing a smaller order (Willow Fabric, for instance, allows you to order in one-yard quantities) and see how it works out for you.

Remember, co-ops aren't just for fabrics. Try doing a search at Yahoo Groups to see if there's a coop running for the supplies you use in your crafts. Odds are there are a few out there!

Do you know of more co-ops for crafty business people? Post a comment!

A Very Sad Day

I am very sad to report that the body of James Kim was found today. We all hoped and prayed so hard, it's still beyond comprehension that it has ended this way.

My heart breaks for the whole family, but mostly for Kati. She and James worked so hard and did everything right to protect their children. They deserved a happy ending.

The family and friends website, jamesandkati.com, is collecting donations. They have not determined exactly where the money will be allocated, but there has been mention of donating to the search and rescue teams that worked so hard to bring them all home alive.

If I hear any more about ways to honor James, I will share them here.

The Kim Family Needs Your Prayers!

Kati Kim of Doe SF (a well-known indie friendly boutique in San Francisco) and her family have been missing for a week.

They disappeared somewhere along the coast of Oregon where authorities believe bad weather caused them to go off the road.

James and Kati have two little girls, Penelope is 4 and Sabine is just 7 months old.

For more information: http://www.jamesandkati.com/

James, Kati, Penelope and Sabine- You are in my heart constantly and I will continue to hope for your safe return.
